"Donkey Cam...
by Adam Jeanes
It must be one of the stranger things that we have done during seas - but today Anne Lise Stenseth strapped her camera to a donkey on Skegness beach. The donkey was called Sooty, and he is a celebrity donkey, for Sotty, who spends his days peacefully strolling around Skegness beach carrying young children on his back, was this week named as the best donkey in Britain. Officially he is "Britain's Best Individual Beach Donkey" and you can see the lovely Sooty here...

And he is really lovely. Anne Lise decided to immortalise Sooty in her latest Kiss and Waste video by strapping her camera to his saddle to get a "donkey-eye view" of Skeggy. His minder, Steve, who is very proud of all the attention that Sooty and his brothers and sisters (who are also officially the "Best Donkey Group in Britain") are getting, was initially a bit confused by what Anne Lise wanted to do. No, she explained, I don't want to film the donkey, I want the donkey to do the filming. Then someone explained that it was for the SEAS project. "Oh - it's SEAS," said Steve, requiring no more explanation, and dashed off to find the right kind of fastening. He came back carrying an elastic strap with hooks, remarking "Well Sooty has been on camera many times, but it's the first time he's been the cameraman." And off they went, bridles jingling, with a group of toddlers for a trip along Skegness beach with Sooty in the lead with his camera rolling.
This is the latest in a weekend of SEAS beach-interventions. Over the weekend the Bulgarian Suitcases group caused a minor sensation with their procession along Mablethorpe promenade. Halfway through their show on Saturday they climbed onto a rollercoaster in the funfair and went for a spin. On Sunday they greeted the bemused in-shore lifeboat crew as they returned to the beach after a practice drill. One of them stole a man's bike and he chased the culprit down the promenade - and in revenge he stole one of their suitcases.
We gave out a lot of brochures on both days - a surprisingly large number of people knew about SEAS already. Some were new initiates. One woman asked me if these white-faced actors were performing a Michael Jackson tribute (she thought they were playing zombies from the Thriller video).
The sun has shone on SEAS this weekend: we will be back in Mablethorpe with Glorious Death and the Fantomats (who are on their way from Norway) later next week. The Mayor of Mablethorpe, Helen, who I met at the opening of Beacon's Hinterland project by Melissa Bliss (part of the SEAS local programme), thanked me enthusiastically, shook my hand and kissed me. I don't think I have ever been kissed by a mayor before...
